Why Veterinary Physiotherapy?
Just like human athletes, our animal companions may experience muscle soreness when they increase their training intensity or recover from injuries. This discomfort encourages the animal to compensate elsewhere in their body, leading to altered movement patterns
Similarly, animals with joint restrictions, such as those caused by osteoarthritis, may find their mobility reduced, resulting in changes to their natural movement and creating tension in other parts of their bodies. For instance, they might favour one leg to protect a less mobile joint or adjust their pelvic position to minimise strain on a limb.
Physiotherapy targets these areas of discomfort and tension. It employs a combination of hands-on techniques like massage, stretches, and joint mobilisations to alleviate pain and release tension by encouraging the muscles to lengthen and the joints to release. This enables the animal to move more freely and gradually regain a normal, healthy gait.
My commitment to your horse or dog
My aim is to leave each animal feeling happier, more comfortable and better able to undertake their activities. I treat each animal as the unique individual they are, taking a comprehensive approach that considers their complete well-being. During each visit, I will assess and treat not only the area causing the main discomfort but also any areas which may have started to compensate. Treating compensations before they become a problem means that the animal becomes more comfortable in their whole body and may be less likely to develop a chronic dysfunction.
Working with you
I strongly believe in team-work, and encourage owners to actively participate in maintaining the benefits of the treatments if they would like to do so. Your involvement is valued and can make a significant difference to your horse or dog . Together, we can create a tailored plan to suit your animal, available facilities and available time.
I understand that questions can arise in-between visits. That’s why every client has direct access to me between visits. Whether you want to talk through your pets progress, or simply want some general advice about their movement or the next steps in their recovery - it’s easy to get in touch.
Who do I treat?
I treat all types of horses and dogs, from happy hackers and casual canine strollers to elite competition horses and champion show dogs and everything in between. I am here to help you get the best out of your horse or dog - whether that’s helping them to recover from an injury more quickly or maintenance treatments to keep them feeling on top form.
I also have a special interest in equine muscle diseases such as polysaccharide storage myopathy (PSSM) and conducted a research project on the effects of different exercise types on horses with the condition as part of my final year BSc (hons), for which I gained a distinction.
